But Karen and Paul missed the Boat Parade, because on July 2 Paul was stricken with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purapura ("ITP"), a blood disease caused by low platelets (normal is 150 to 400, and his was only 2 - see www.pdsa.org), and he spent a week in a Modesto, CA, hospital.

Karen reprised her role in True Grit at our annual Academy Awards Party

In September, Karen, Paul and Amy (from Washington, DC, where she works for the U.S. State Department) spent three weeks in China, starting in Shanghai, cruising for 8 days up the Yangtze River, flying to Xian to see the Terra Cotta Warriors and then flying to Beijing for Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China.

Unfortunately, after our return from China in September, Paul had a reoccurrence of his ITP low platelet blood disease, his platelet count was back down to only 2, and he was again in the hospital.  He is continuing treatment with various drugs, including Prednisone.

=================================

Erik (from grad school at The University of South Dakota) and Amy (from her job with the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC) came home for a week

at Thanksgiving and an early Christmas (as Karen and Paul were to be on a 35-day cruise from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore over Christmas and New Years).

Stanford University had another great football season!

If only they did not have to play the University of Oregon (only 2 losses in the last two years)!
